Reflecting on Grid Modernization During VP.Start’s Visit to EDC Banteay Meanchey

We are excited to visit Sisophon and the EDC offices in Banteay Meanchey. It is very far from Phnom Penh to Banteay Meanchey and this reminds us at VP.Start of 3 important aspects of grid modernization.

First of all, true grid modernization must be equitable. It doesn't matter if you live in downtown Phnom Penh or rural and remote farming villages of Banteay Meanchey. You should have access to the same reliable energy supply. If grid modernization doesn't apply to everyone, how can we call it grid modernization?

Secondly, we need to have energy independence as a long term goal. We live in a complicated world. It is risky to depend on other countries for our energy supply. We cannot make changes rapidly but we need grid modernization to be headed towards energy independence.

The last one is connected to energy independence. We need to build a robust grid that can accommodate and integrate renewables effectively into the overall grid. Our government is focusing a lot of attention on this area.

We need an equitable and expanded grid for all Cambodians, regardless of where they live, we need to move towards true energy independence and a part of that is more effective integration of renewables.

That's what I am thinking as I am going down a Banteay Meanchey highway.
